A Level 5 Leader (L5L) is an individual who blends extreme personal humility with intense professional will. The characteristics and success of these leaders were first identified by Jim Collins in 2001. They formed a central plank in his best-selling book  Good to Great . The discovery of Level 5 leadership derived from a research project that Collins began in 1996, when he set out to answer one question: Can a good company become a great company and, if so, how? The answer was the concept of a  Level 5 Leader . The L5L sits on top of a hierarchy of capabilities and is, according to Collins’ research, a necessary requirement for transforming an organization from good to great. Individuals do not need to proceed sequentially through each of the lower four levels of the hierarchy to reach the top, but to be a full-fledged L5L requires the capabilities of all the lower levels, plus the special characteristics of Level 5. The characteristics are: Level 5 Executive: Builds enduring g

How to Staff a Star Social Support Team

Dave Evans   VP of Social Strategy, Lithium As you step inside any contact center or meet with any support manager, there is always one common theme: staffing. It is no secret that social has completely changed the way companies staff support teams. Understanding how social has upended certain hiring practices while reinforcing others is essential to recruiting and staffing your social teams. An Organization of Experts Many organizations are still building a social customer response team by handpicking or selectively hiring social agents with experience in a traditional call center (often their own). It is important to recognize that   social   is not a channel   and therefore, companies must look across the entire organization of   experts   as potential points of customer engagement. In practical terms, that means any employee is potentially an   agent.   That is really hard for some companies to grasp. On a similar note, brands should not overcomplicate social. Thinking

10 Everyday Things Creative People Do That Lead to Success

BY  PETER ECONOMY    @BIZZWRITER Practice creativity to find the success you desire -- in life and in business. One of the measures of a truly successful individual is how innovative he or she is. Likewise, the creativity it takes to be truly innovative is what separates successful businesses from the rest. Creativity can accelerate a company's profits and growth beyond that of its less-innovative competitors. The added benefit is that the creativity and the resulting innovation are unique to the creator--the individual or company that came up with the idea. Why rely on old ideas and innovations? Why not encourage creativity with new ideas--beginning with your own? The good news is that, believe it or not,  anyone  can be creative. For some, it may take a little more practice than for others, but it is still achievable. Start with these inspiring things very creative people do everyday and give yourself a chance to find your own creative, innovative self. 1. Obser

Customer service Failure

All of the companies, surrender of their size, are trying to make themselves different with their services. It means that all of the companies invest big money on their customer service to have better customer retention rate. The main value advantage! I called to many customer services for getting my results, and it was interesting that I found them on the same way. None of them when they were searching for something to cover my need, didn't speak with me! It means that during their research and process, I was in the silence! Why is it wrong? When a customer calls to a customer service, it means something disturbs him/her, and he/she needs to have some special care. Always we know that a good customer is really a huge asset to the companies, but unfortunately most of times we forget how to do that. A customer who comes to us with a problem, it means something is wrong and first of all after telling nice sentences such as "how may I help you today?", he/she needs to se

Transform Meetings from Boring to Productive

What’s the number one cause of inefficiency and lack of productivity in America?  One word: Meetings.  What should be truly meaningful, useful time dedicated to the creation of tangible value is instead reduced to mind numbing, poorly facilitated, ineffective meetings that rob you, your workplace, and your organization of joy, productivity, and results.  What can you do about it?  Take action NOW. Deliver a life-changing experience instead of merely meeting an expectation.  Here are just a few ways to make all of your meetings more productive: 1. Stop and think: Is the meeting necessary?  Reduce the number of regularly-scheduled meetings. Obtain consensus or results without filling the conference room. Use alternate ways to achieve your outcome before committing a dozen people to an hour-long conference. A meeting invite shouldn’t be your instant response to every challenge or issue.  2. Reduce the number of attendees.  Stamp out “Over-Invitation Syndrome.” Do you invite the whole gan

10 things Product Managers must do I love being a Product Manager. Hunter Walk  defines product management as being where Science meets Art. He's right. It's a unique role in that it touches on all aspects of a business.  Ty Ahmad-Taylor  elaborates further, explaining: “Product lies at the intersection of business, design and engineering. It is your role to educate business people about design and engineering, engineers about business and design, designers about engineering and business.” Throughout the process you read a ton of email, look at many screens, and create relationships with a lot of awesome people. Yet through it all, there remains one constant: the product. The product is your baby.  You must keep its interests at heart, make it look nice, ensure it grows and matures, and (of course) tell the world how great it is. Everyone can keep learning and improving; I strive to do so every day. But in my time working in the profession (building software spe

How to Become the Robin Hood of Internet Marketing Archery

BY  PETER ROESLER One of the greatest benefits of marketing on the internet is also the thing that makes it the most challenging. The fact that just about everyone is online means it's harder to reach the specific group of consumers a business owner would like to reach. The key to a successful internet marketing campaign depends on two things, proper targeting and good aim. Marketers need to become skilled archers, deftly shooting the arrows of their message past online distractions to squarely hit their target audiences. The ability to know which audiences to target and when to shoot the message are vital skills that take practice and thought to master. This article will show business owners and marketers how they can become the Robin Hood of internet marketing archery. The first thing business owners and marketers have to do is decide on a target audience. Business owners may think they have a product or service with universal appeal, but that is rarely the case. Despite w

The Top 7 Online Marketing Trends That Will Dominate 2014

Jayson DeMers The Internet has drastically altered the way in which information is shared, and has had a profound impact on marketing. Over the past few years, there has been more of a shift toward inbound techniques, while many outbound tactics have become antiquated. More businesses are finding success publishing original content rather than embedding advertisements within external content, because of the additional benefits these tactics offer, such as branding and audience growth. With these trends in mind, let’s discuss my predictions for the top online marketing trends of 2014. 1.      Content Marketing Will be Bigger Than Ever One of the main ways that companies are establishing authority and gaining trust with consumers is by consistently creating valuable content through a variety of channels. This typically involves relevant industry information that provides insight or entertainment to an audience. Doing so allows a company to steadily build rapport with its
